During his graduate studies his research focussed on innovative assessment practices and how they can foster discourse, understanding, and achievement in technology-supported learning environments. Currently, he is working on discursive formative assessment practices in Quest Atlantis, an immersive learning environment, and is exploring how digital social networking, wiki, blogging, and other Web 2.0 technologies can foster knowledge building around personally meaningful issues for middle and secondary school students. His latest work in Quest Atlantis has been the embedding of in-game formative assessment and the incorporation of a wiki to the game-based curriculum. For his PhD research at Duisburg Learning Lab, he is particularly interested in developing innovative assessment practices in online environments.
